What is the Poetry Challenge?
The Togetherness Poetry Challenge was created to foster connection and unity, countering isolation and divisive rhetoric that holds us back both as individuals and as a society. It aims to amplify voices, celebrate diversity and bring people together through shared reflections. In a world increasingly impacted by conflict, climate change, and loneliness, creativity and solidarity are more important than ever.
Launched in March 2024 by Civil Society Consulting, this annual UK-wide challenge invited people to write poems on the theme of togetherness. The response was overwhelming - over 450 poems poured in from people of all ages and backgrounds, including those in prison, individuals facing chronic loneliness, healthcare workers, teachers, and others from diverse cultural, religious, and socio-economic backgrounds.
Why poetry?
Poetry is a unique and powerful way to process emotions, connect people from different walks of life, and express the universal need for community. For many, writing is therapeutic, offering a way to release pain and reflect on shared human experiences. The poems we received highlight the transformative role creativity plays in building bridges and fostering understanding.
Through this challenge, we’ve witnessed the profound ability of poetry to inspire connection, empathy, and hope.
